Children
Of Divorce Counseling
The
individuals that are harmed the most in an
unstable marriage and/or divorce are the children.
The "innocent" children should be
able to have and feel love and security in
the home. They need to feel safe; they should
not be in the middle of an argument between
their parents. Unfortunately, there are consequences
for children of divorce. Studies have shown
that Teens from single-parent homes are twice
as likely to drop out of High School or become
teen parents. Moreover, they are 1½
times more likely to stay at home as a young
adult.

Daughters
from female-headed households, are much more likely
than from a two-parent family, to become a single
parent and rely on public welfare for support as
an adult. A daughter living with a single mother
at the age of 16; increases her risk of becoming
a "household head" by 72% for whites,
and 100% for African Americans. The contrast becomes
even sharper if the comparison is between daughters
continuously living in two-parent families, if the
daughter is living with an unmarried mother at anytime
between the ages of 12 and 16. Exposure to single
motherhood at some point during adolescence increases
the risk of a daughter to later become a household
head by nearly 1½ times for whites, and by
100 percent for African Americans.
My
approach in talking with each child is that they are
individuals, and that they can all be affected in
different ways and at different levels. Therefore,
I try to meet each child where they are at, based
upon their individual feelings. I will also help you
as the parent to work with your children to help bring
about a healthy home life and lifestyle.
