How Long Will Counseling Last?

This is a common question. First of all, all counseling is voluntary and you have the right to terminate at anytime. However, the length of your counseling will be primarily determined by what the issue is, how hard you are willing to work on the problem, and what the final goal is. Upon the Initial Free Evaluation and paperwork review, a counseling schedule will be recommended based upon your stated goals, and the issue(s) to be worked on.

Usually I will meet/telephone counsel with clients on a weekly basis at first, and then graduate to biweekly and then to a monthly time of maintenance and support. Again, depending on the individual/couples goals and objectives this process can take from a few months to a year or more. The average length of time is around 6 months. Again, your progress largely depends on you and the effort you are willing to put into accomplishing your goals.

Possible Telephone Counseling Limitations

  1. You may be more comfortable and trusting, etc., with a counselor who is physically present.
  2. Communication may be more difficult because your counselor cannot see your facial expressions and body language, which makes it more difficult for the counselor to understand what you are feeling. Because of the limitations of phone counseling, it is imperative that the client and counselor communicate clearly and that the client take responsibility for communicating as much as possible about their thoughts and feelings.
  3. Telephone counseling is not appropriate for clients who may be suicidal, homicidal, in extreme crisis, or that may have serious emotional problems.
  4. Telephone counseling is generally not reimbursable by your insurance, and we do not accept insurance claims. It is your responsibility to prepay for your services, and then get reimbursed from your insurance company, if allowed.

We at MyNewCounselor.Com will do everything we can to provide you with 100% confidentiality.
